Small Business Saturday: Celebrating Local Businesses in Alberta

by Shawn Crowle

Small Business Saturday is more than just a shopping day – it’s a celebration of the backbone of our local communities. Here in Camrose, and across the province, small businesses are the lifeblood of our neighbourhoods. They create jobs, support local initiatives, and provide the unique products and services that make our towns vibrant and welcoming.

What is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday began in 2010 in the United States as a way to encourage people to shop locally during the holiday season. Falling between the mega-sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the day quickly gained momentum with it’s simple focus: to spotlight small businesses and inspire communities to invest in their local economies.

While the movement originated in the US, its spirt has spread worldwide and here in Canada, Small Business Saturday is a reminder to support he small businesses that make our communities unique, especially during the bustling holiday season.

Why Support Small Businesses?

Small businesses do more than just provide goods and services – they’re deeply embedded in the fabric of our communities. Consider this:

  • They Keep Dollars Local: Studies show that for every $100 spent at a small business, a significant portion stays within the local economy, feeling growth and creating jobs.
  • They’re Personal: Small business owners go the extra mile, providing personalized service that big-box stores simply can’t match.
  • They Build Community: Small businesses sponsor local events, donate to charities, and create spaces where neighbours can connect. Shopping small is a direct way to support these community-building efforts.

Ways to Support Small Businesses on Small Business Saturday

Supporting small businesses doesn’t have to mean spending big. Here are some meaningful ways to make a difference:

  1. Shop Local: Visit local stores, farmers’ markets, and independent shops. From handmade goods to one-of-a-kind finds, you’ll be amazed by what’s available so close to home.
  2. Dine Out: Head to a locally-owned restaurant, bakery, or coffee shop. By choosing to eat local, you’re helping to keep the lights on for these beloved spots.
  3. Spread The Word: Can’t make it out today? No problem! Share your favourite small businesses on social media or leave a positive review online. Word-of-mouth is incredibly powerful and important to small businesses.
  4. Gift Local: The holiday season is the perfect time to give gifts that support local businesses. Consider a gift card from a local spa, a unique item from an artisan shop, or even a membership to a local gym.
