In October 2019, I was invited to join Battle River Watershed Alliance for the Finding Common Ground tour. The tour focused on exploring various energy options and moving toward sustainability. This was 2 days full of learning, exploring and discussions to find the common ground we share in terms of our energy sector.

I have often thought about how much difference can 1 person really make? Can one person really do much to impact change? When we were at Lacombe High School I was left in awe. One teacher had an amazing impact on sustainability and moving toward developing such global citizens.

Mr. Schultz is the supervising teacher at Lacombe High School’s Eco Vision Club.  It was during a class where he said the lack of action is just good intentions. He was then challenged by one very insightful student to take action.  He then engaged her drive and commitment by setting out his terms and conditions.

She needed to find 11 other like-minded students to form the environmental group.  Then these students had to put some skin in the game to show their commitment. They were required to come up with 3 pillars (vision) the group would stand for. That was in 2006.

Fast forward thirteen years and this special interest club still exists, running under the same 3 pillars of action.  The environmental action taken by these students over the years, supervised by the AMAZING Mr. Schultz, is mind-blowing.  

All of their projects have been researched and implemented by this environmental action group.  It is the students who build designs and then work on the finished project.

Their first project was to put solar panels on the school to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.  The students went door to door of every home in Lacombe to solicit donations. They did countless fundraisers.  These students were successful in showing that hard work and determination pays off. They ended up getting their solar array installed on the roof.

It was within a short period of time the unthinkable happened.  The school roof was under repair which resulted in causing a fire.  The students watched as this fire brought damage to the solar panels and crushed the spirit of the Eco Vision members.  They saw their heart and hard work being destroyed. Mr. Schultz described students on the ground and crying, devastated at the loss.  Thankfully, the system was replaced by insurance.

They regrouped and rose from the ashes under the inspiration of Mr. Schultz.  Their next project was going to be a year-round tropical greenhouse. The students designed all aspects of the greenhouse, including heating and cooling systems. 

The greenhouse is in the shape of a dome; for letting optimal sunlight in.  The north reflects sunlight into the aquaponics pond for the thermal mass used in temperature retention.  The students researched the best products to get the best outcomes. When I heard of the venting system the club installed on the dome, I was in AWE!  It is  self-venting! There is beeswax applied to the vents. They innately open and close with the expansion and shrinking of the wax. It is done automatically based on the temperature of the interior.

The tropical greenhouse has solar thermal, geothermal and passive heat stored by the aquaponics pond.  All designed and implemented by the students.  

I felt like I was in the tropics in the dome.  They had a banana tree which produces every 3 years, in addition to avocado, lemon and  fig trees.  We also saw tomatoes, mushrooms, and herbs growing within the greenhouse.  This environmental group of students has taken on an identity of its own.  The development and growth over the years are phenomenal.

The students wanted to have beehives as part of their projects.  Their school division was cautious about the liability and safety concerns that may arise with having honey bees. It was advised to try to nurture solitude bees (bumble and leafcutter).  If you know me you know I am a huge advocate and designer of using native flowers as landscaping components. Students also then built a bee hotel and planted native flowers for the bees.  They were then granted permission to acquire beehives. Now they have 6 hives which each produce an average of 100 pounds of honey a year.

The Eco Vision Club has grown and taken on new projects.  Projects that support food sustainability. The organization has 175 fruit trees planted in their gardens.  They have raised vegetable beds in a circle configuration to pay tribute to being on Treaty 6 grounds.  

The Eco Vision Club is not only a group of students moving toward a more sustainable world, but these are young entrepreneurs who are also making their projects economically viable. One of the participants was watching a pitch on Dragon’s Den.  The show was for a cooler to produce microgreens. This student then took it upon themself to write the company and explain their program and what they had already accomplished. The generous company then gifted them with a microgreen cooler. They now grow microgreens and sell to local restaurants.  The revenue is then put back into future projects.

The day we were visiting, we observed students harvesting carrots and taking them to the cafeteria.  The cafeteria utilizes the food grown in Eco Vision Club’s greenhouses and gardens. The group also sells the surplus to help fund future projects.  They sell honey, beeswax covers and garlic.

As the Finding Common Ground group was leaving, one of our most amazing student hosts/tour guides approached Mr. Schultz.  He stopped what he was doing, looked right at the student, and said “YOU Inspire ME”. One of the things I loved about Mr. Schultz is that he has inspired me to do better.  I always thought my family was pretty environmentally conscious.  We recycle everything we can, and we have solar panels.  The Finding Common Ground Tour has emphasized my belief that it does not have to be an all or nothing system to move forward and bring change.  It has motivated us to do better. 

Since the Finding Common Ground Tour, we take our own containers for leftovers when we go out to eat. We are more conscious of single use beverage containers, and we all now have our own re-usable mugs and water bottles.  I am much more focused on reducing our household consumption, and often ask “Do I/we really need this”?   The Common Ground Tour has made me a better steward to the environment.
