If you and your family are gone from 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday, that is a large chunk of time throughout the week that you don’t need to heat your home to people-pleasing levels. Turn down the heat for those 10 hours and reap the benefits at the end of the month. If you happen to have a programmable thermostat, program your routine so that the house warms up 30 minutes before you arrive home and you won’t even know the difference.
Remember, hot air rises, so if you have ceiling fans, change the rotation from counterclockwise to clockwise to push the warm air down and keep your space warm.
If you have a dishwasher and washer and dryer, make sure that you wash full loads. Even if you switch the settings to a small load, the machine is going to use almost the same amount of electricity and water as you would with a full load, and you will run the machines fewer times each month.
Washing your clothes in cold water can reduce electricity consumption 85 – 90 percent. Except for rare cases, you should never need to wash your clothes in hot water, so, set your washers to cold.
